“Captain McNeill…”
The voice is distant. I can hear the words but can’t find the face they belong to.
“Captain McNeill, can you hear me?”
My eyes open. Vision is still blurred, but I recognize the speaker now. It’s Kobi.
“Thought we lost you for a moment, sir,” he says.
“It takes a lot to kill me,” I reply, gritting my teeth against a flash of pain in my legs. “What’s our status?” I spin around anxiously to map out my surroundings. There is smoke everywhere, thick plumes of it, but my breathing apparatus filters the air of toxins.
“Keon’s injured but not bad. Took some shrapnel to the side. He’s in the corner resting. The rest of the squad is MIA. I pulled you both to the first floor. The TDU were waiting for us on the second floor. I watched them gun down Brio and Tomi…” he says, his voice trailing off.
“What else?”
“It’s Squad 19, sir.” The words ring in my ears, repeating themselves.
Squad 19.
I should have known it. Obi and his men must have used the tunnels to enter Rohania after they escaped the attack on Camp Salvation not two days ago. And this is Obi’s revenge. Payback for the loss of his beloved headquarters and soldiers.
For a second, I am reminded of the video I came across while writing my report earlier today. It was recovered from the display of one of my three dead Knights and captured the battle for Camp Salvation. There was a young girl who gunned down two of the Knights. I can’t help but wonder what happened to her. Did she mean something to Obi?
A short wave of energy rushes over me, and I rise to my feet. “Where are they?”
“They must have retreated into the tunnels,” Kobi says with a shrug. “I haven’t heard gunfire for a few minutes.”
We’re wasting time. I’m not letting Obi escape again. I grab my rifle and head for the stairs, just as my head mic blares to life.
“Captain McNeill, come in, over.”
I pause and look back down at Keon, who is curled up in the corner, clutching his side. “Roger, McNeill here, over.”
“Copy that McNeill, this is Supreme Knight Morr. Good to hear your voice. What’s your squad’s status? Over.”
What’s my status? It’s a good question. I’m not even sure how to respond. My ears are ringing, my legs are on fire, and over half my team is missing or dead.
“My squad has suffered multiple casualties. Several Knights are MIA. Requesting permission to engage the TDU into the tunnels, over.” Silence washes over the radio before it blares back to life.
“Captain McNeill, this mission has changed from a hostage recovery to a search and destroy. You have permission to engage, but be warned we can’t get any reinforcements to your location at this time. This was a highly coordinated attack, and the TDU has set off bombs in several other locations in Rohania. All squads have been deployed to other areas.”
I can hear the anger in his voice. This was never a hostage mission to begin with.
